Research Hub

CSBA is a think-and-do tank focused on scaling climate-smart building solutions that also make business sense for our members.

In support of this mission, we launched the CSBA Research Hub, a platform where thought leaders from across our membership collaborate to produce new thought leadership. This work supports their internal business strategies and informs future initiatives for the Alliance.

2026 Research Hub Project: Bio-Materials Ready to Scale

Lead CSBA Member – DIALOG

Bio-based materials, those derived wholly or partially from renewable biological resources, offer an impactful pathway to both reduce embodied emissions, while also storing biogenic carbon in building assets. When sustainably sourced and paired with responsible end-of-life strategies, bio-based materials can deliver meaningful climate benefits alongside broader economic, environmental, and social value.

This white paper was developed by DIALOG with input from a working group of CSBA members to increase industry understanding and uptake of carbon-storing and bio-based materials in Canada’s built environment. The paper focuses on applications with high impact potential in larger residential, institutional, and commercial buildings,  prioritizing building envelope systems and select interior applications.

The report identifies three high-potential biobased materials for near- to medium-term scaleup in Canada, considered factors including carbon and environmental performance, code and riskreadiness, technical performance, constructability, and supply chain scalability. These include wood based products, engineered and prefabricated straw based systems, and hemp based  materials. These materials demonstrate strong carbon reduction potential, increasing technical maturity, and alignment with Canadian forestry and agricultural sectors.
